Social Networking

Social Networks are adopted with the aim to stimulate the cooperation among the different categories of stakeholders involved in the project. Social networks are changing the way information is spread out in the world and their application in training and knowledge management is increasing in several fields.

A new virtual community contributing to increase the welfare of animals during long distance transportation in Europe was set up, adopting «LinkedIn» social networking platform, the world’s largest professional network with 225 million members in over 200 countries and territories around the globe.

This community was represented within the LinkedIn group named “Animal transport certification system and renovation of Control Posts in Europe”; four thematic sub-groups were also created with the aim to discuss the following issues:

Invited members were experts and professionals coming from several EU Member States and Third countries; the discussions were focused on finding concrete suggestions and inputs to face the relevant controversies and challenges in the field on animal welfare during transport.

The main target groups were:

  • policy decision makers
  • animal welfare scientists
  • official veterinarians
  • CPs managers
  • animal transporters and their associations
  • NGOs

An active management of the group was leaded by the group managers and the group moderators: at least one group manager from IZSAM and one group moderator from a relevant partner for the specific topic were appointed.

Specific articles, publications or topics of analysis were shared in LinkedIn; questions were opened and answers collected through the online sub-groups of discussion.

Moderators had the objective to stimulate and activate the group discussion. In order to help them, a “Moderator’s Guide” was distributed.

Members of the discussion groups were invited to present their perspectives and give concrete suggestions on achievements or crucial topics of the project. The discussion was constantly monitored in order to collate relevant outcomes and underline inputs and agreements to be shared during the final conference of the project, held in May 2014.

At the end of the project a final report concerning the evaluation of this pilot social networking activity was produced:
