High quality Control Posts - Animal transport certification

Final conference of the Animal Transport Certification and Control Post Project

The final international conference of the DG Health and Food Safety funded project “Development of EU wide animal transport certification system and renovation of control posts in the EU” was held on 7 May, 2014 in the Hague, Netherlands, at Kurhaus Hotel, Scheveningen.

Seventy four experts and professionals coming from fourteen EU Member States, extra-EU countries (Canada and USA) and International Organisations took part in the event.

The event aimed at presenting to different stakeholders the project outcomes and to collect their comments and expression of interest in being involved in developing the transport certification scheme established within the project.

The point of view of transporters and other external inputs are crucial in order to improve the project results: for this reason, the conference was promoted in close cooperation with the ATA (Animal Transport Association), which in this occasion organised the 40th Annual Global Conference (detailed information are available here).

Date: 7 May, 2014
Place: Steigenberger Kurhaus Hotel, Scheveningen The Hague (NL)

Conference Programme:

The event was divided in morning and afternoon sessions: during the first session an overview of the project results and an introduction to the DG Health and Food Safety approach about the potential role of a certification system in improving animal transport conditions in the EU were presented.

Following all the partners in charge of developing specific project actions presented their results and achievements. Moreover, an interesting contribution about legislation and transport conditions of cattle and pigs in USA and Australia were given by ATA representatives.

The afternoon session was dedicated to main outcomes of the discussions promoted through four social network discussion groups focused on the following areas: harmonisation of the authorisation of Control Posts in the EU, animal transport legislation and conditions of long distance transport, role of animal based parameters and cost-benefit analysis of a private certification versus public control system.

Along the project life, experts and professionals coming from several EU and extra-EU countries shared their knowledge and experience in order to find suggestions/options to face main challenges on these fields; the relevant outcomes of the virtual discussions held in LinkedIN were summarised during the conference with the audience.
