Animal Transport Certification
On the basis of the scientific criteria defined in the previous steps of the project, a “Welfare Plus“ Certification Scheme for transport companies was developed. This model was tested in 10 transport companies in three different EU countries. Spot checks at 6 CPs were also executed.
Interested livestock transporters had the chance to be involved in the testing of a certification system for good animal welfare during long journey transports by means of receiving the test audit.
The test audit was completely free of charge for participating companies, which had the opportunity to be published as being “Welfare Plus” (publication is voluntary).
How it worked?
The test audit consisted of an office audit and a spot check audit of loading/unloading which were free of charge and carried out by Baltic Control Ltd. during the spring of 2014. In the case of approval according to the pilot scheme “Welfare Plus”, the transporter had the opportunity to have their name published on the project website on a list of audited transporters.
Shortly after the audit was finished, the transporter received a report on the results together with a short questionnaire in order to collect feedback on the transporter’s experience of the audit.
This pilot scheme was subject to specific policy rules for the test audits in the framework of accreditation of certification bodies. Click here for more details.
