Objective and Work Packages

Animal Transport Certification

The project "Development of EU wide animal transport certification system and renovation of Control Posts in the European Union" aimed at supporting building and renovation of 4 Control Posts (CPs), in order to establish highest quality standards for these centres, and at developing a proposal of certification scheme for animal transporters operating long journey transports.

Building and renovation of Control Posts

Detailed planning and design of new building and renovation of 4 CPs were developed, taking into account requirements to guarantee high levels of animal welfare, bio-security systems, work safety and efficiency of personnel, as well as environmental sustainability. Indications derived from the feasibility study and from the certification scheme for CPs were mainly used in order to build newly and renovated quality CPs.

Scientific basis for a certification scheme of animal transport

The Work Package 2 was linked with the Work Package 3 concerning the development of a pilot certification scheme for animal transport over long journey. In particular, assessments of compliance with the legislation and assessments on welfare for different species (cattle, pigs, sheep and horses) during long journey transports were carried out. Moreover, to enable a better risk management, recommendations for monitoring animal welfare during transport were developed to be used also for the elaboration of the pilot certification scheme.

Development of a pilot certification scheme for animal transport in the EU

The Work Package 3 was dedicated to the development of a pilot certification scheme for animal transport in the EU, supported by scientific research developed in WP2 on the assessment welfare of animals during and after transport. The Pilot certification scheme took also into consideration the recommendations and extensions of the Quality Control Post certification scheme developed within the project SANCO/D5/10753/2010.

Information and dissemination of results

The main aim of the Work Package 4 was to inform interested parties, potential users of CPs and transporters participating in the initiative about project outputs, particularly on internationally recognised good practices, requirements and standards concerning animal welfare and bio-security issues, the assessment of welfare of transported animals - as outcome of WP2 - and the project certification scheme for animal transporters operating very long journey.

Management of the action

The management of the project actions and the organisation of the Advisory Board Meetings were crucial component of this Work Package 5 (WP). The effective management and the co-ordination - including planning and financial monitoring systems, as well as the system for quality control - together with a day-to-day project management, were handled to the highest possible standards.
